Dungeon Crawler Carl

Matt Dinniman

Active 9 / 10 No. 0503

Earth is demolished for a dungeon. A man in boxer shorts and his ex-girlfriend's cat enter a televised deathcrawl. It is far better than that sentence has any right to be.

The premise is a bit. The execution is not.

Earth's buildings are demolished by an alien syndicate, the survivors are funnelled into an eighteen-floor dungeon, and the whole thing is broadcast as entertainment to a galaxy that finds human suffering charming. Carl goes in wearing boxer shorts and a coat. His ex-girlfriend's prizewinning cat, Princess Donut, acquires sapience, a title, and opinions.

What makes it work is that the LitRPG scaffolding — the stat blocks, the loot notifications, the patronising system messages — is doing satirical work rather than power-fantasy work. The dungeon is a production. The notifications are ad copy. The audience is the villain. By about book three the joke has quietly become an argument about spectacle and complicity, and it lands, mostly because the book never once stops being funny while making it.

On the audiobook. Read the print if you want. Jeff Hays' narration is the recommended entry point and it is not close. Princess Donut alone justifies it, and the full-cast production of the announcer segments does something the page cannot.

Society position. Books 1–4 are catalogued (No. 0503 through No. 0506). We came to the print editions after the audio, which is backwards, and we would do it that way again.
